What started as a few shinny games among friends became Milton Shinny Hockey in 2019, built to bring people together through hockey, exercise and community. Women and men, beginners to experienced, in a safe and respectful game where everyone gets involved. It has grown into much more, with members connecting off the ice and supporting each other’s businesses.

When I first laced up with the Milton shinny hockey organization eight years ago, I thought I was just signing up for a weekly skate. What I found was a community. Whether you’re a seasoned player or barely remember how to stop, there’s a spot for you here. The games are recreational, the atmosphere is welcoming, and everyone shows up to have fun. That mix of all skill levels is what makes it work.
The friendships are the real payoff. Every year, our annual golf tournament brings everyone together for a great day on the course, all while raising money for charity. It’s a reminder that this group is about giving back to the community we play in, not just what happens on the ice.
And then there are the road trips. Jason has organized sports outings that turned teammates into genuine friends, with the kind of memories you only make on long drives, in the stands, and around a table afterward. Thank you, Jason, for all the work behind the scenes.
If you’re thinking about joining, do it. Great hockey, great people, and some even better memories.

I joined Milton Shinny Hockey (MSH) thinking I was just signing up to play some hockey, but it’s turned into so much more than that. I’ve met a ton of great people, made some new friends, and had some pretty awesome experiences along the way.
One of the highlights was definitely the crazy road trip to Nashville to watch the Leafs, party, and have a weekend that I’m sure we won’t be forgetting anytime soon!
A big shoutout to Commissioner Jason. The guy puts a ton of effort into making MSH more than just beer league hockey. Between organizing the games, putting together trips, and even running fun charity golf tournaments, he’s constantly finding ways to get everyone together and build a real sense of community.
What I really like about MSH is that it’s co-ed and welcoming to everyone, from beginners all the way up to experienced players. It doesn’t matter what your skill level is — you can come out, play some hockey, have some laughs, and feel like part of the group.

Milton Shinny Hockey is good hockey with exceptional people, but it’s about so much more than the game. I’ve been a part of this group for a year and a half, and in that time I’ve volunteered at the MSH golf tournament, co-hosted the MSH All-Goalie Game, and played easily 100+ hours of ice time with some of my favourite people, including my husband.
I was new to hockey when I joined, but this community always made me feel welcomed and right at home. That’s what makes MSH so special. It’s so much more than hockey — it’s a community, and it’s given me a sense of belonging that I’ll carry with me long after I’m no longer able to hit the ice.
Our story
From one skate
to 1,100+ members.
MSH didn’t start with a plan. It started with a friend’s invite and a new set of gear.
Milton Shinny Hockey began with a simple invitation. In 2017, my best friend Mike asked me to join him for shinny in Burlington. I hadn’t played in more than 20 years and didn’t own any equipment, so I bought a full set of new gear and got back on the ice.
Before long, we were bringing games to Milton. I started helping with the organizing, finding players and lining up goalies, and within a few months we were filling full rosters with support from another local Facebook group.
Tony, the organizer of that group, kept encouraging me to start my own. I told him there was no need, since I could simply use his. He didn’t give up, and in 2019 I created Milton Shinny Hockey.
Soon after, members began asking about jerseys. Michael Malarski, a local realtor and now a good friend, generously offered to sponsor them. I started sketching logo ideas, my cousin Michael G. brought the design to life, and in March 2019 Peter from MerchCo delivered our first jerseys.
After COVID, I saw how much isolation and mental health were weighing on people. So I began running games several times a week. For many of our members, that time on the ice became a welcome break and a place to reconnect.
Today, MSH has grown to 1,100+ members on Facebook, with four jersey sets, charity tournaments and road trips. Through it all, the heart of it hasn’t changed. It’s a community built on friendship, and it all started with one friend asking another to come skate.

Family skatesMSH hosts family skates from time to time, so bring the kids. Weekly games are 18+.
